Utopia's Hope of Nordlicht Hope Floats! Here is a new update about Hope from her new owner Darryl: (posted 4, 2006) This has also been written up in the German Shepherd Dog Review as well as the Northwest GSDC Newsletter
At 09:00 AM on that Monday the power went out in Oak Harbor. I only had one
phone and it is a portable. So, no power = no phone. I was working in the
garage and felt dizzy. I came into the house with this unusual feeling of
weakness, shortness of breath, and feeling of faintness. I sat on the bed and
noticed it was 09:20 in the morning and still no power. The next thing I knew
I was having a severe amount of chest pains. Then it was 10:00 AM and I was on
the floor with Hope licking my face continuously to wake me up. She was pawing
at my shoulders also. She just would not stop. I knew the phone was useless
and I needed so desperately to get to a 911 operator. I got to my knees and
used Hope as a support then crawled to a neighbors home pounding on the door
for help. No answer. I crawled to the second neighbors home with the same
result, no answer. Finally I saw almost a block away a garage door was opened.
Hope helped me get to that home and the man had a cell phone to call 911. Hope
remained at my side. Then I could faintly hear an ambulance's siren in the
distance as I passed out.
When I woke at the hospital the E.R. doctor told me that indeed I suffered a
heart attack but my real problem was I had no red blood cells. I was so anemic
that my brain and heart were starved for oxygenated blood. In other words he
said, I was on the floor dying when Hope kept up her incessant licking and
pawing to wake me. Whidbey General hospital admitted me and used several pints
of packed red blood cells over the next few days. When Dr Stern came by he
said, "fellows like you die each day with your exact same condition. The
luckiest thing that could have happened was your German Shepherd knew you were
in trouble and what to do to help you." Had she not been at your side you'd be
another statistic I'm afraid, you owe that Shepherd a lot." "Well she did and
your alive now thanks to her instincts". Then I was asked to bring Hope to the
hospital when I felt better so they could meet this remarkable girl and to
visit with the hospital staff. I did so and when she was there she went from
room to room visiting patients and giving them all a - "Little Hope!" as
well. Hope is now a constant visitor to the hospital where she is welcomed by
all... She loves it. I love it also. They all love her just as I do... She is
a service dog now for Whidbey General and all those that are there, as she
is giving them all some new found "Hope!"
I'm on the mend now. My problem has been found and a cure is in progress. All
thanks to a German Shepherd that just seemed to know what to do for me. Any
idea how that makes me feel?
Regards for now
